HISTORY

The Faculty of Education, Yogyakarta State University (FIP UNY) was originally the Pedagogical Section of the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy, and Philosophy of Gajah Mada University (FSPF UGM) Yogyakarta. Gajah Mada University (Gadjah Mada State University) itself was founded (confirmed its establishment) on December 19, 1949 with Government Regulation Number 23 of 1949, namely the Temporary Regulation concerning the Merger of Higher Education Institutions into Universities.

The exact date and legal basis for the "Pedagogical Section" becoming part of the Faculty of Letters, Pedagogy, and Philosophy at UGM is unknown. Legally, the Section's existence was confirmed by Government Regulation No. 37 of 1950, dated August 14, 1950.

Analogous to Gatutkaca who was born with the name Jabang Tetuka, the Senate of the Faculty of Education agreed to determine the "birthday" of the Faculty of Education UNY ("Gatutkaca") since its birth as "Jabang Tetuka" (Pedagogical Department), not since it was named "Gatutkaca" (Faculty of Education or Faculty of Pedagogy UGM). So, it was understood that August 14, 1950 (the de jure existence of the Pedagogical Department of the Faculty of SPF UGM) was the birthday of the Faculty of Education UNY. This understanding was confirmed by the Decree of the Dean of FIP UNY dated December 23, 2010.

This understanding is based on data traced by the UNY Faculty of Education Birth History Data Search Team, chaired by Drs. Dwi Siswoyo, M.Hum., with members Drs. Sutiman, MPd. and Drs. Waluyo Adi, MPd., under the responsibility of Drs. Tatang M. Amirin, M.SI.

In the Annual Report of Gadjah Mada State University 1951/1952, page 17, it is stated that the opening of lectures at the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy of UGM was only carried out on January 23, 1951. So, due to various situations in the country at that time, lectures did not immediately run even though legally the Pedagogy Section and the Faculty of SPF UGM had already been established.

In the report it was also stated that starting from March 1, 1952, the Physical Education Academy was integrated into the UGM Faculty of SPF into a section called "Physical Education Baccalaureate."

Furthermore, based on the Decision of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture, dated May 28, 1953, the Faculty of SPF UGM received an additional Education and Education and Teaching Planning Center.

In the Annual Report of Gadjah Mada State University 1953/1954, page 9, dated September 19, 1954, it is stated that the SPF Faculty is divided into the following departments: Eastern Literature, Western Literature, History, Earth Sciences, Physical Education, and Pedagogy.

Starting from September 15, 1955, with the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture Number 53759/Kab:Regulations concerning the Completing of the Structure of Gadjah Mada University, which was included in the Annual Report of the President of Gadjah Mada University for the 1954/1955 academic year, it was stated that the Faculty of SPF was divided into three faculties, namely (1) Faculty of Literature, (2) Faculty of Philosophy, and (3) Faculty of Educational Sciences (in other texts called the Faculty of Pedagogy).

So, the current UNY Faculty of Education was developed from the Pedagogical Section of the UGM Faculty of SPF on September 15, 1955, not September 19, 1955 as is usually celebrated so far.

Effective September 19, 1955, with the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture dated September 16, 1955 Number 33895/CIII, the heads of faculties at UGM were appointed. So, September 19, which has been commemorated as the BIRTHDAY of the UNY Faculty of Education, is the true day of the appointment of the deans (heads of faculties) at UGM. This decree was read by UGM Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sardjito in the UGM Open Senate Meeting on September 19, 1955.

Based on this determination, it is known that the Head of the Faculty of Pedagogy (written as Faculty of Pedagogy, not Faculty of Educational Sciences) is Prof. Drs. A. Sigit.

Furthermore, with the Decree of the Acting President No. 1/1963 and Instruction of the Minister of Higher Education and Science (P.T.I.P.) and the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture (PPK) No. 32 and 34 of 1964, FIP UGM, FKIP UGM and the Surakarta Teacher Training Institute (IPG) were merged into the Yogyakarta Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP). The Psychology Department of FIP UGM separated and became a separate faculty within UGM. IKIP Jogjakarta was inaugurated by J.M. Minister of Higher Education and Science on May 21, 1964.
